BBC Radio 4 Broadcast completed
….and it was quite a nerve wracking time for me.
The programme is called Shop Talk and will be aired next Tuesday at 4pm.
I was in a small studio in Nottingham which was freezing cold and on my own - the girl who showed me what to do was lovely and brought me a glass of water - which for someone who avoids water like the plague - was very welcome - because dry mouth was a real problem. I was remote from the rest of the contributors who cozied up in London.
and I was incredibly nervous, I kept telling myself it was no different to being on the telephone - and usually no issues there for me!. But of course it was nothing like being on the phone and it all felt so alien - so if I come across sounding like a complete plonker - I apologise in advance and you know why.
The programme itself was interesting to listen to and I thought the whole programme covered the ‘blogging’ issue very well and above all Eie Flud got some very good ‘air time’.
‘So Heather, why are you called Eie Flud?’ - well, errm, its errrm like this, errm……… something vaguely to do with heritage and old fashioned methods, and water - lets hope I actually made a bit more sense, because I truly don’t remember what I said!!
I was enthralled with ‘broadcaster ease’ - Heather Payton the show’s presenter, had that beautifully relaxed resonance that sounds normal on the radio but when you hear it for real sounds disconcerting - she chatted amiably and then ‘wham’ straight into broacasting mode. I felt I wanted/needed to drop several octaves to sound informed and authoritative - you just know however I’ll be squeaking like an adolescent boy!!
They were very nice to me but I felt so nervous and stressed - I don’t see me taking up any media jobs anytime soon!

Damn the Torpedo’s, Full Steam Ahead! Ok…I got that from an old black and white movie…but the gist is: “Way to go! No stopping you now!”
I’m sure you came across as genuine and knowledgeable about your business on the show, for who to know better about what you are doing than you?
For the record, I have been using your soaps and balms for quite some time now…as well as my 15 yr old daughter. We love everything we’ve tried and keep coming back for more! The quality is excellent and so personal..I mean…You make it yourself and grow almost all the ingredients!
Granted I lean more towards natural products, but I’m picky too. So glad you are out there making a name for yourself! ‘Bout time people were exposed to such fabulous soaps and goodies!
Continued success!

It’s a good job I wasn’t on.
They wouldn’t have been able to cope with two of us pregnant pausing our way through the whole affair.
At least you’ve been thrown in at the deep end.
This Morning should come as quite a breeze.

Heather, yours was a brilliantly clear explanation of why your company is called Eie Flud. You came across very measured and authoritative, not at all stressed! And there were no ‘erms’ or pauses that I remember.
So you are in for a shock - you might actually like the way you sound.

“To speak is to sow; to listen is to reap”(said to be a curdish proverb)
Now: You have spoken, which I think is great and I honestly admire your courage.
Tomorrow: A lot of people will harvest the fruits listening to you on the internet.
The day after tomorrow: You will be amazed how many people will invite you for diner….

Dear Heather
I just heard you on the radio. You were great! Right from the start, wnd great, whhen you explain the naming of your company. There is passion in your voice and you sound great, which for sure is not due to the new soundcard within my computer.
Don’t you think you should link this 30 min discussion directly for the next couple of days on you blog? I think it is http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/news/shoptalk/ram/shoptalk_current.ram
Keep on going

Heather, you sounded very fluent and professional. Believe me, you did a much better job than I managed last year when the local TV reporter turned up at my studio and stuck a camera in my face.
You have a great blog and I will be subscribing to your rss feed. I have been reading Thomas Mahon’s blog for some time now, and it was his post today that alerted me to the show.
I have one questions for you. Do you ever regret choosing the name eieflud? It took me some time to track your website down. I can’t help but think there should be another io in there, as in e-i-e-i-o
But seriously now, the usual advise on choosing a website name is to select something easy to communicate over the phone. I would be interested in your experience with this.
Anyway, congrats on your radio appearance, and I hope that it and the blog brings you lots of business.

The giant street market
An email from James Cherkoff alerted me to yesterday’s edition of Shop Talk, a weekly BBC Radio 4 business programme, in which he was one of the studio guests talking about blogs and blogging. Together with Adriana Cronin-Lukas of Big

Derek
Thank you for this comment.
EIEIO made me laugh!
Yes I was surprised that Richard Fenton Smith had done a brilliant job on the edit - because I held my breath when it was my turn on the radio - but I didn’t sound as bad as I thought I would.
My eldest son said it sounded nothing like me however ?
As for Eie Flud - well it depends. From a local perspective (where the workshop and shops are based) - it is useful to have something unusual, gets people wondering, asking etc - and once they’ve spoken you have a hook to grab them on - and they always end up liking the fact that its local.
Remotely however, Eie Flud is meaningless and there is that block that says - what does that mean? Whats that then?
Generally, I think it works for us - but in the future it could be problematical. Although a name doesn’t have to be straight forward to be successful I’d like to think- but I realise it flies in the face of advice.
I really like it though - no one else did when I told them - but I stuck with it, because it really meant something to me - when I saw it on that old map - I knew that was the name I wanted.
Like your blog too - I really like this blogging business I get to meet some really interesting people who would be hidden from me if I didn’t.
